We often don’t care how the cables under our desks appear; after all, they are not open for everyone else to view. The lamps, typewriters, phones, phone chargers, monitors, desktops, e.t.c, all have wires, and they can get frustratingly intertwined, which is none of your business.

Many people are concerned about getting their job over with, so the health or organization of their wires is none of their business.

Only when there is a technical fault or a need to unplug or plug back an appliance would you realize how much of a chaotic situation you currently have under your tables. Yet, having a simple organization for your wire can be incredibly helpful.

Here are some convenient tips to keep the cables under your table neat

Seven tips for organizing computer cables

Depending on the type of desk you have, the kinds of hardware you possess, and how they have been arranged on your table, your office space could appear organized with the following tips:

Unplug Everything and Place the Power Strip in a Suitable Position

It is easier to begin the clean-up work from scratch, go down to the barest level, and unplug everything from the power strip. Separate all the different cables from the extension box and their different devices. This would give you much clarity and ease up your work.

You could mount the power strip to the wall or suspend it on the tabletop. This step is vital as it provides an orderly convergence of cables. This is crucial to preventing another “cable law and order” breakdown. For a standing desk that can be adjusted, it is best to have the power strip installed underneath the desk. If your desk surface is not very thick, you would have to use short screws to make the power strip firm.

Wrap the Cables Together

If it is possible, you can go on to reduce the cable length so that they are not left to dangle and become intertwined again. You can carefully loop the cables and secure them with tape, bunch up the wires, or consolidate them with a nail.

You could ensure this is correctly done using Velcro straps or even the less complicated zip ties. The disadvantage of zip ties lies in their durability; you would have to cut them to remove the relationship from the cables.

Purchase c13 Type Plugs

The c13 plug connector is one of the many plugs recommended for computers, monitors, printers, e.t.c. Its 4-ft. (1.22m) length allows flexibility in arranging devices. It provides sufficient size to prevent table clutter.

Besides being a suitable replacement for worn-out cables, the green color-coding aids ease of identification in a crowded workstation. Purchasing this type of colorful cord would have reduced the chance of misidentification of wires.

Look for Cable Ports Built into Your Desk

Some older desks might lack cable ports, but the more recent desks have these parts through which cables can be arranged accordingly. Desks with partial backs also enhance cable organization as they permit the wires to run through the back to the outlet connection underneath the table. Even if there are no inbuilt cable ports, utilize the spaces within the desk.

If your office desk has many drawers, you can create a notch through the back of the drawer where your wires can pass through.

Purchase Wire Trays and Cord Sleeves

Suppose you want to loop the wires comfortably into a bundle; you can apply zip-ties like it’s already mentioned. But if they are not your preference, you can use wire trays, cable channels, and cord sleeves.

When attached to the underside of the table, the wire trays keep the cable firm. The cable channels and sashes also hold wire bundles neatly. The fact remains that zip ties are the most durable ties; however, the other options are more aesthetically appealing.

Use Color Codes for Easy Identification of Cables

Another way to keep office cables tidy is to use colorful clips to secure the wires. Attach the same specific colored strip to both ends of the thread.

This would help you know what wires to disconnect or plug without much thought.

Obtain Labels for the Cables

You could also use labels in place of colorful strips. This is a straightforward solution that would also serve the same function. You can easily remove the adhesive portion from a sticky note and wrap the note around the table base.

On the said sticky note, you must have written the appliance’s name. You could also use clear paper for this purpose.

Conclusion

A thorough organization is essential for optimal productivity. Therefore, every measure should be taken to eliminate stress and confusion in the workplace. Begin from a critical organization, go step by step, and put your cords in order.
