The visitor visa UK allows you to visit the UK for a short specified period of time, about 6 months to meet their family relatives, friends or do leisure activities and engage in tourism.

Pre-requisites of visitor visa

You must demonstrate to UK Visas and Immigration that you are a genuine visitor in order to be granted a Tourism and Leisure Visit Visa.

This implies that you will:

  • Will depart the United Kingdom at the conclusion of your visit.
  • Will not reside in the United Kingdom for an extended period of time or make it your primary residence.
  • Have enough money to cover all reasonable costs associated with your visit without having to work or rely on public subsidies.
  • Are truly seeking admission for a reason that the tourist routes allows, and will not engage in any forbidden activities.

Things to keep in mind when travelling on a visitor visa

Before travelling, the majority of travellers will need to apply for a visit visa in their home country. Some countries’ citizens, however, are exempt from this need and can simply apply for entry at the UK border.

You can stay in the UK for up to 6 months if you have a Tourism and Leisure Visit Visa. Unless your visit visa is endorsed as a single or dual-entry visa, you are permitted to enter and exit the UK several times throughout the validity period of your visit visa.

Permissible activities

Visitors with a Visit Visa are allowed to visit friends and relatives and/or come to the UK for a vacation. They can also engage in allowed business activities as outlined in the Business Visit Visa part, study for up to 30 days, and get private medical treatment, provided they meet the extra requirements outlined in the Private Medical Treatment Visit Visa guidance.

If you want to marry or form a civil partnership in the United Kingdom, you’ll need to apply for a Marriage Visitor Visa. You must apply for a Permitted Paid Engagement Visa if you want to do a Permitted Paid Engagement.

Without working or using public funding, you must have adequate means to cover all reasonable costs associated with your visit. This includes the cost of your return or onward journey, as well as any charges associated with dependants and scheduled activities.

Visitors on Visit Visas are not permitted to work, receive payment from a UK source for any activity carried out in the UK, or stay in the UK for more than 30 days for non-incidental research.

You must make an online application as early as 3 months  before your trip.
